In late September 2007, Lee Cavaliere travelled to Shaolin Si, the Shaolin Temple in Henan Province, China to make a new film and photographic project, The Shaolin Tourist.
The project looked at Tourists as they take part in day-long Kung Fu lessons, engaging fully, if only for a day, in the traditions and mythology that Shaolin represents to Westerners.
The artist stayed in a kung fu school for the duration of the residency, whose students were busy preparing for the Beijing Olympics opening ceremony.
This work is supported by Arts Council England, the British Council, Island6 Art Centre, Shanghai, and Central St. Martins School of Art and Design, London.
