The Poets had emerged in the early stages of this project as a personification of a nonspecific urge to escape. They believed in the myth that the Lake District was a wilderness, and that there they could find solitude and a simple, spiritual view of the world, and of mankind within it.
100 six inch high Poets were made. These poets are all identical, made into somewhat comical characters by the way that their assured, content, thoughtful poses were reflected 100 times, undermining their romantic intentions.
Once they were all made, they were allowed to 'escape', and were distributed throughout the Lake District. An 'Escaped Poets Hotline' was set up, so ramblers in the Lakes could report when they found one of the Poets, which, inevitably, they did.
